Retelling a Story

The Bantam and the Soldier
Once there was a farmer who lived on a farm and he had lots of hens on his farm. One of them was a bantam. All of the bigger hens pecked the bantam. Bertha usually slept outside in the bush. The farmer let the hens fend for themselves. One day a shell hit the barnyard and then Bertha got stuck between the branches. Then a soldier came and sat beside Bertha. Suddenly Arthur saw something moving inside the bush so he carefully pulled it out. It was Bertha. Suddenly the leader called “Hurry up!” So Arthur slipped Bertha in his coat. When the soldiers were at war Bertha laid eggs. When the soldiers were going home the leader said “You need to leave Bertha here”. So he left Bertha on the grass where poppies were growing.

The Soldier and the Bantam
One day a bantam lived in the shed. It collapsed but the small bantam survived. She got stuck in between bushes. Some soldiers were coming to rest. One of the soldier’s names was Arthur. There was a noise coming from the bushes and Arthur found a bantam.

The Bantam and the Soldier
On a sunny day when war was going to happen a farmer rounded up his animals. He took off leaving the hens behind. Suddenly the shed collapsed into dusty bricks. Bertha got thrown into thorny branches. Arthur slipped Bertha in his coat. The captain said “Times up”. They kept on walking. They walked for miles. The fighting got heavier and heavier. The soldiers collected grubs and worms. She deserved them because she laid eggs. They were happy. Arthur said we might be able to survive. Arthur shared the eggs with the other soldiers.
