These yummy smelling biscuits are for our Red Cross parcels for the soldiers. We hope they like receiving them.
We are a wonderful group of Year 2 and 3 students at Saint Paul's Catholic School in Richmond, at the top of the South Island. Our teachers are Mrs Bryant and Mrs McTague. We hope you enjoy sharing our blog. Your comments are welcome.

The Donkey Man
Great Jack Simpson
Simpson went to Turkey but he was planning
to go to Egypt. Simpson went out and made a friend, not just any friend, a
donkey. That is how they carried people. Simpson gave the donkey a head bandage
with a red cross to identify him. Jack Simpson saved more than 300 people. One
day while Jack was walking he got shot. The bullet went through his heart. They
buried him with a cross on top of him – it said In Loving Memory Jack Simpson.

Simpson Who Helped Wounded People
Once upon a time a long time ago there was
a person called Simpson. Simpson grew up to be in the war. One day he saw a
donkey that was doing nothing at all. Simpson slowly went to the donkey so he
could be friends with her. Simpson called the donkey Duffy. Simpson worked with
Duffy. They carried water to the soldiers. They also helped wounded people a
lot. Duffy carried the wounded people. Simpson saved three hundred people. But
Simpson died because he got shot. Then Simpson was buried. On top of him there
was a cross that said Jack Simpson.

Our Museum Trip
People sold lead toys because they didn’t know that they were poisonous. People didn’t call people on the cell phone. There was a lever and if you pulled it the other end would flash. Elizabeth
I used the morse code machine and it was fun. Most horses had things on the side of their eyes to stop them getting frightened. Scarlet
The soldiers lived in a big tent called a bell tent. A dog named Stubby sent messages. Kyle

Ash Wednesday
On Ash Wednesday, our class joined the rest of the school for a liturgy. We were all given ashes on our foreheads to remind us that we should try to follow Jesus more closely. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent and we have been learning about this in class and have made lenten promises. Hopefully you will see us keeping our promises throughout Lent.

Shrove Tuesday - Pancake Races
On Tuesday of this week we had pancake races with Kea Class for Shrove Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday is the day before lent begins. Ask us why people traditionally made pancakes on this day.
Weka Can Swim
My swimming teacher showed me how to float and put my face under the water. Flynn
At swimming today I had a noodle around my waist to teach me to float and kick. Siobhan
I put my thumb up and cupped my hand through the water. One hand went over the back on the board. Elijah
Yesterday at swimming one of my favourite things was life saving. It was really cool because one person was pretending to drown and another person was holding a rope. When they can see that person they throw the rope to them. And they hold on tight and you pull them in. Caleb
My favourite bit was at the end. We played Throws and Tows. You throw a rope out to someone who is pretending to drown and you have to stand on the rope and let them catch it and you pull them in. After that we did it with a noodle. Lily
We had to make our bodies go sideways and we had to kick our legs and put our head on our shoulder. My favourite thing at swimming was jumping in the deep end with the lifejacket on and I had lots of fun at swimming. Rhema
Today at swimming we learnt to do dolphin dives. You dive down and then you go up again then dive down again. So you keep on doing it. At the very end of the wave pool we put life jackets on and we jumped in from the middle of the pool. Alice
